Sometimes, it seems like fitness resolutions are made to be broken. How many times have you heard someone say they’ve broken their diet, can’t get to the gym as often as they’d like, or just didn’t manage to keep their resolutions for the year? There are fitness resolutions you’re almost definitely going to break at some point, but there are also things you can do about it.
Resolution 1: “I’ll hit the gym every day.”
Not only is this not sustainable for most people, it isn’t always a good idea. Your body needs periods of rest, and your brain needs stimulation outside of the same fitness routine every day. Set sustainable physical activity goals, schedule days of rest for yourself, and mix up gym going with hiking, sports, or other things that can keep you interested.
Resolution 2: “I’ll never eat this again.”
It doesn’t matter whether it’s red meat, dairy, sweets, or carbs, one of the most surefire ways to make yourself want something more is to deprive yourself of it. Instead of telling yourself they’re off-limits, make room in your diet for small portions of your favorite foods. You won’t feel deprived, and you’ll be less likely to overindulge.
Resolution 3: “I’m going to lose X pounds by X date.”
Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose how much weight you’ll lose in a given time frame– your body does. Instead of preoccupying yourself with a date on the calendar and a number on the scale, set goals based around eating better and being more active. Some resolutions are easily broken, but it doesn’t have to be that way. By picking reasonable goals and having a plan in mind to achieve them, you can keep your resolutions and lose weight in a safe, sustainable way.
